Box Office News - Reign Of The Dark Knight Comes To an End
Tropic Thunder, the movie we said might turn out to be this generation's Ghostbusters looks like it could have the necessary crossover power to be a serious hit but it probably lacks the widespread blockbuster numbers to make good on our prediction. It did come in at number 1 with $26 million over 3 days and $37 over 5 days to finally end the reign of The Dark Knight at the summit of the box office charts. The haul is pretty impressive for a comedy that was opening on the same weekend as Michael Phelps was making Olympic history. It's a victory for an inventive marketing strategy that included some classic viral clips. Search Tropic Thunder on our site and you'll get some of them.
The Dark Knight still came in at number 2 with an impressive $16 in its fifth week, pushing it into 2nd place in the all-time box office charts (which are essentially meaningless unless you adjust them for inflation). Enough has been said about that film's success already. Expect it to top $500 million over the next month with repeat fanboy business.
The other story of the weekend was that the Star Wars well seems to have run dry. The Clone Wars came in at number 3 and looks like it will struggle to top $40 million in the coming weeks. It seems that no franchise is immune from a backlash . The law of diminishing returns eventually translates to the box office and it seems the fans are unwilling to accept this as a legitimate part of the saga. I'm sure George Lucas might pause for thought as he wipes his ass with his $100 dollar bills and maybe, just maybe he'll feel some regret and disappointment. Then he'll return to reading the latest draft of the Indiana Jones 5 script while lighting his cigar with a trillion dollar bill.
