Here goes another post about a sacreligious remake. This time Slap Shot
You may remember we bigged up Slap Shot here in our DVD Bulletin several months ago, so you'll already know that we are going to be protective of this baby. Now we could possibly forgive a remake if there was some serious talent involved in front of and behind the camera. So let's take a look shall we? According to Variety:
Peter Steinfeld (”21″) is penning the script, with Dean Parisot on to direct. When Steinfeld took the writing job and spoke about it last summer, Internet pundits were critical of the notion of updating a favorite sports film. Yet such nostalgic resistance certainly did not hurt The Longest Yard, remake, a global hit that grossed far more than the original. Parisot last helmed a remake of another comedy “Fun With Dick and Jane
Now let's break that down. 21 was received with a universal sigh of indifference from critics and audiences. A resounding 'meh! Fun With Dick And Jane was probably the least funny comedy we have seen in the last 5 years and certainly the least funny of Jim Carrey's movies (and we include the dramas in that). Making Carrey not even occasionally amusing is a staggering feet of incompetent directing. As for The Longest Yard, let's just read that sentence again; ;a global hit that grossed far more than the original'. Hmmm. I wonder if Variety have every heard of a little thing called inflation. It tends to have a big effect on the comparative grosses of movies released 300 years apart.
Granted it did perform reasonably well at the box office but then Adam Sandler was in it and he could take a shit on a piece of celluloid and it would make a killing amongst that niche target market of people who like stuff that isn't funny. And if they even think about putting Adam Sandler in this to pull in some of the Happy Gilmore market we're blowing up the studio.
