Who Watches The Watchmen? Well it seems we will be and right on schedule to boot. The Watchmen legal dispute has settled, and everything is on course for the film's release on March 6. Of course none of this is to be confused with our beautiful blog site which pays loving homage to the novel. If the movie can hold a candle to the novel, then it can claim part of our homage too but while we're extremely optimistic, we're reserving judgement.
Anyway, the parties to the dispute released this statement.
Warner Bros. and Twentieth Century Fox have resolved their dispute regarding the rights to the upcoming motion picture Watchmen in a confidential settlement. Warner Bros acknowledges that Fox acted in good faith in bringing its claims, which were asserted prior to the start of principal photography. Fox acknowledges that Warner Bros. acted in good faith in defending against those claims. Warner Bros. and Fox, like all Watchmen fans, look forward with great anticipation to this film's March 6 release in theatres.
Whatever. To explain in simpler terms, 20th Century Fox had been claiming breach of copyright by the film's makers, Warner Bros, on the basis of two agreements made in 1991 and 1994. After the judge trying the case ruled in Fox's favour on an important preliminary point on Christmas Eve, negotiations for settlement between the two studios went into overdrive, and they finally came to an agreement yesterday. The settlement will see Warners pay Fox an unspecified sum upfront, and then give them an unspecified share of the film's profits.
The countdown begins.
