More WTF News? Tarantino Casts Mike Myers
Last time I looked it wasn't April 1st. So what's with the frankly-so-silly-it-must-be-a-joke-but-hey-its-Tarantino news that Mike Myers has been cast in Inglorious Bastards.
Was Tarantino worried he was selling out by casting genuine A-listers like Brad Pitt instead of resurrecting dead careers of has-been stars? Did he then pick up the newspaper and read all the reports that Mike Myers is the highest profile has-been on the block after his career suicide in the (apparently, why would we see it?) abominable The Love Guru? Did he think to himself, 'now there's a challenge'?
Who knows? The fact is that Myers is playing a British army major and the role is relatively straight (that is of course relative to cracking lame jokes and looking at everybody, including the cameraman, for a laugh). We shouldn't be so harsh. We are major fans of Wayne's World and we had time for some of the Austin Power franchise. Dr. Evil is a classic character after all but it's hard to feel sympathy for talented people who disappear up their own arsehole. Waynes World was great because it was a collaboration of great comic talents guided by a capable director who wasn't Myers's yes-man (or woman in this case). Let the rehabilitation begin.
In other inglorious news, it has emerged that Adam Sandler (being Jewish and being ripe for casting stunts) was asked to take a part in the film but he is already booked to star in the perhaps ironically titled Funny People for Judd Apatow. Seth Rogen is in it too so maybe the title isn't ironic. Maybe Sandler can rediscover what is was like to be funny again.
