Will Smith Is Some Sort Of Box Office God
It's been said elsewhere, but we'll say it again. Will Smith could take a shit in a can and the results would make $100 million. There is further evidence to back up that statement after this weekend.
Hancock (which some people have compared to a shit in a can but which isn't quite that bad) opened with $107 million. Granted, that was with a Tuesday opening so the numbers are skewed, but it still took in $66 million over the weekend having been out for 3 days already. It is the 24th highest opening in history and easily one of the highest ever to be based on original material (i.e. not a sequel, not an adaptation and not about Jesus or a really famous sinking boat). After the success of I Am Legend and just about every other movie he's been in, Will Smith should now be crowned the biggest movie star in the world. Tom Cruise must surely hand in his crown along with his cheesy grin. You're time is up Tom. Although, there are scurrilous rumours around that Will Smith is now a Scientologist, so expect erratic/borderline psychotic behaviour from him in the near future, which should ruin his career and make way for the new king of the box office, Rob Schneider.
In other news. Wall-E is still going strong and with kids movies generally showing slower drop-offs, especially over the Summer, expect this to keep trucking and become one of Pixar's biggest movies ever. Here's the weekend Top 5 (not including Hancock's early opening)
1. Hancock, $66M
2. WALL-E, $33.4M
3. Wanted, $20.6M
4. Get Smart, $11.1M
5. Kung Fu Panda, $7.5M
