The Dark Knight Posts Biggest Opening Of All Time
No prizes for guessing what movie topped the box office stateside this weekend but we might give you a gold star if you predicted the breathtaking numbers that catapulted The Dark Knight to the accolade of BIGGEST OPENING EVER!!
It’s the biggest opening for any Batman film (not adjusted for inflation) and is more than three times the opening of Batman Begins. So why was it such a success? An audience desire to get behind a genuinely good blockbuster that wasn't all hype and no substance? A widespread interest in Heath Ledger's last full performance? The relentless publicity and marketing campaigns that brought the use of internet virals and staggered releases of publicity material to new levels to keep fanboys foaming at the mouth? The fact that Batman Begins was so good that expectations were justifiably heightened? A combination of all of the above?
It will of course be interesting to see what sort of legs this movie has. If word of mouth is good, expect it to be the biggest movie of the summer. In other news, Mamma Mia did well in its counter-programmed berth taking in $27.6 million while Hellboy II's audience was hoovered up by the Batman and it dropped a disappointing 70% to $10 million.
1. The Dark Knight, $155M
2. Mamma Mia!, $27M
3. Hancock, $13.8M
4. WALL-E, $9.85M
5. Hellboy II, $9.67M
