Box Office News...Sex And The City...Yawn!

It had been suspected that SATC wouldn't do the numbers to knock Indiana Jones off the top spot at the U.S. Box Office this weekend but it delivered to become the biggest opening for a rom-com ever, the biggest opening for an R-rated comedy ever and the biggest opening for a TV adaptation ever (if you don't include stuff like Transformers, which technically was an adaptation of a toy).

Worryingly (or encouragingly depending on your world-view or your genitalia) the numbers dropped hugely between Friday and Saturday and again between Saturday and Sunday suggesting one of two things: 1) The movie sucks balls leading to bad word of mouth 2) All those big groups of girls who planned a girly night out around going to the opening night, booking their tickets 5 years in advance and planning the whole month of May around it, have now seen the movie and everybody else could care less. Expect numbers to trail off substantially in the next week. Here's the top 5 in full.

1. Sex and the City, $55.7M
2. IJ4, $46.0M
3. The Strangers, $20.0M
4. Iron Man, $13.9M
5. Prince Caspian, $12.6M

P.S. It was hard to find a photo in which the SATC girls all looked somewhat attractive. SJP was chief culprit/horse-lookalike.
