Box Office News: Iron Man Kicks Off The Summer In Style

Iron Man did the business after a lacklustre few weeks at the U.S. box office, officially kicking off the Summer blockbuster season. Iron Man took in $98.6 million in its opening weekend and if you count the Thursday's previews it actually edged past the magic $100 million mark. This was the 4th best early May opening on record so it's no surprise to learn that a sequel is already in the works though its unclear how much of the original team is involved but we suspect they're all locked into cast iron contracts already...ahem!...Hello...Is thing on?

This also announces Marvel studio's arrival to the big league. If they can keep this up they will be trading blows with the big boys very soon. It's particularly impressive given that it's probably the biggest performing B-list superhero movie to date. That is, we're not talking Spiderman, Batman, Superman, X-Men or even Hulk here. This is a big hit from a relatively small name. It stamps on the faces of the Daredevils and Ghostriders of this world (who deserve a good stamping - I saw Daredevil on TV last week...Jesus, it's horrific).

Oh yeah and Made of Honour grossed $14.8 million, which is surprising since it looks about as fun like 2 hours of acid burning into my eyes.
