Breaking News: The Golden Compass was a Hit!

I know it's not polite to talk money but this is a first. The Golden Compass was a massive hit. I know, that's not what I thought either. It underperformed in the US making just $70 million, well under the $120-$150 million target. But internationally the film has grossed over $300 million. Variety reports this is a first. This success and an Oscar for Best Visual Effects combined with a newly shaping New Line could mean that the sequels could get a greenlight. Being a fan of the books, I hated the Golden Compass and would rather not see them make it to the big screen if 'The Subtle Knife' and 'The Amber Spyglass' are handled in the same cold and thoughtless way as was done with 'The Northern Lights'.
