Business was soft in the states this week following on from the Thanksgiving session to hit a ten-year low in terms of attendance. Not helping matters were new releases whose receipts were skimpier than usual, including an pathetic opening for Punisher: War Zone.
Four Christmases (who wants to see a pic of Vince Vaughan anyway) seems to be benefiting from poor competition topping the box office again with $18.2 million. The total now stands at a hearty $70.8 million in 12 days, which stands up pretty well tall against similar movies.
Twilight was down 50% but still ranks second for the weekend, drawing an estimated $13.2 million for a 17 day total of $138.6 million a full $20 million more than Sex and the City managed at the same point.
Elsewhere Australia is still a minor disappointment, just managing to cross $30 million in 12 days but the real news is how Quantum of Solace has underperformed in the states (relatively speaking of course). It collapsed 65 percent in its fourth weekend to an estimated $6.6 million, grossing less than predecessor Casino Royale. It was the biggest post-Thanksgiving fall ever for a James Bond movie. The tally grew to $151.5 million in 24 days, which trails Die Another Day in terms of attendance. Could the tepid word of mouth from this side of the Atlantic have killed its momentum. The consensus is that it wasn't as good as Craig's debut.
Lastly, Punisher: War Zone, had a pitiful start, grossing an estimated $4 million from a sizable spread of theatres. It was the smallest opening ever for a Marvel Comics adaptation by far, even lower than Howard the Duck. Nuff said.
