Hollywood Babies: Tim Burton

This Monday morning treat is the little seen stop-motion animated short film by Tim Burton from way back in 1982. Vincent is the story of a boy who wishes he was Vincent Price. For Burton to actually have Price doing the narration must have been a wet dream come true.

As we have done with other ‘Hollywood Babies’ we like to indulge ourselves and look at these early works and consider the young filmmaker that made them and reflect on their career by comparing one to the other. And in this case, although a delightful and ‘Burtonesque’ gothic tale, it curiously demonstrates how Burton hasn’t moved on as a filmmaker. Place Vincent beside Corpse Bride and ask: Has this filmmaker grown from one to the other? Well, has he? And is that a bad thing? Maybe Burton has being telling stories that make him happy in a way that delights him and that we should shut up.

Despite that piece of ‘Pound Shop’ film analysis Burton and his worlds have delighted us for the past twenty odd years; Edward Scissorhands, Big Fish, Ed Wood & Batman Returns are just some of the gothic goodies which he has given us and we’re willing to put up with Planet of the Apes in anticipation for another delicious dark chocolate Burton confection. Until then, enjoy Vincent. We did.
