Last week we skipped reporting that High School Musical had topped the box office with huge numbers mainly because it was boring and predictable. This week, the numbers fell off a little more than people expected, perhaps indicating that it won't be a cash calf rather than a cash cow. Don't get us wrong. There is exactly 0% chance that there won't be a College Musical or a HSM4 Freshmen Year.
Of more interest to people over the age of 12 is the performance of Zak and Miri Make a Porno. It had been hoped that this would be Kevin Smith's breakout hit but alas, it seems he is condemned to the life of a cult filmmaker. Despite the presence of Seth Rogen, the movie only managed a €10 million opening, which isn't too shabby for a relatively cheap comedy but it's a long way from the numbers of Knocked Up another sex-themed comedy starring Rogen.
The film wasn't helped by a series of hindrances caused by people who seem to have suffered a sense of humour bypass or worse, people who seem are scared of sex.
-Many publications refused to carry advertisements for it because it contained the word porno.
- Posters had to be revised again and again to placate the draconian and hypocritical advertising standards (see below)
- It got some bad press when it had to make several cuts to barely get an R-rating
- As a result, at least one major cinema chain refused to show it.
So under the circumstances it did alright but, it all means Smith will always have to battle to get his projects off the ground. He's use to these battles though. He's a big guy. He has to battle to get his feet off the ground.
