Coens Top Box Office - Breaking News: There is Justice In The World

1. Burn After Reading, $19.4M
2. Family That Preys, $18M
3. Righteous Kill, $16.5M
4. The Women, $10.1M
5. The House Bunny, $4.3M

The Coen Brothers' Burn After Reading topped the weekend box office chart opening with over $19 million, their biggest opening to date. The numbers probably weren't harmed by the presence of Brad Pitt, George Clooney and a stellar supporting cast. But it also goes to show that contrary to popular belief, there is some justice in the world and making a great film like No Country For Old Men will translate to people wanting to see your next film. Shocking stuff, no?

Meanwhile the unstoppable rise of Tyler Perry continues unabated with Family That Preys coming in at number 2. Perry is a bit like twinkies or baseball. No matter how successful it is over there, we'll still continue to not give two flying fucks about it. And long may that continue. Amen.

Righteous Kill came in at number 3 and could be considered to be a disappointment for a movie with Pacino and DeNiro but considering the poor reviews, the lack of a USP in the premise and the fact that DeNiro and Pacino (we even switched the billing so they don't get angry) are long past being box office draws, a $16 million opening is extremely healthy, especially when set against the modest $40 million budget.

One further point to note. Last week's number one Bangkok Dangerous would only have been good enough for 5th position and only by the skin of its teeth. That's how bad a week it was for the box office last week. The moral of the story - which seems to be forgotten repeatedly - is that good movies will make money*

*Editors Note: Bad movies often make money too but so do ugly prostitutes. The real moral of the story is that there's no accounting for taste.
But if you're making a movie, it never does it any harm to make it good.
