Nobody Likes Screwball Comedy

The U.S. box office figures for the weekend are out and the most telling numbers come from the relative failure of Leatherheads, George Clooney's third film as director. The film only took $13.5 million from a large number of theatres. Considering it's a romantic comedy crossed with a sports movie starring two A-listers in Clooney and Renee Zelwegger, they're some surprsingly low numbers.

The real story is that the publicity behind the movie pushed the screwball comedy elements of the picture and considering that Down With Love(starring Zelwegger) and Intolerable Cruelty (starring Clooney) were both screwball comedies and both relative failures, this was probably not the best marketing plan. Although it might have had something to do with the ridiculous helmets and George Clooney pretending to be young enought to be a sportsman.

In other news 21 remained at number 1 though the box office has been less than spectacular. It opens in Europe next week along with Leatherheads so the re-match is on.
