Hobbit Movie = Fanboy Orgasm
So the big story today is The Hobbit movies are go. Fan boy geeks rejoice. Guillermo Del Toro has signed on to direct the adaption of the prequel to Lord Of The Rings. There will be 2 movies made from the book (which isn't exceptionally long so expect it to be quite faithful)and Del Toro will start work on them when he finishes Hell Boy II. Jackson will be involved presumably as a producer and possibly as scriptwriter along with his wife Fran Walsh, who co-wrote Lord Of The Rings.
Del Toro may look like a giant Teddy Bear but he's a perfect choice and probably the only director that fans would have accepted other than Jackson. Also, Jackson's involvement rubber stamps it. We already know Del Toro can do fantasy after the outstanding Pan's Labyrinth , the only question is how much of his own stamp he will (be allowed to) put on it. The films are to be shot in New Zealand and Weta are doing the FX so expect major similarities. He may find himself in a studio straight jacket adhering to the template of Lord Of The Rings. While some may see this as a good thing - it wasn't broke and doesn't need to be fixed - we'd like to see him express himself and give us a slightly new interpretation of Middle Earth. After all, we've had over 10 hours of Jackson's vision already.
