Comedy Is King - Box Office News

Check out the Top 5 at the U.S. Box Office this week.
1. Baby Mama – $18.2 million2. Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo – $14.6 million3. The Forbidden Kingdom – $11.2 million 4. Forgetting Sarah Marshall – $11 million5. Nim's Island - $4.5 million

They're all comedies. Is it the time of year? Is it a current trend? Is it the influence of the all-powerful Apatow? Is it that cheap comedies are thriving in the calm before the storm of summer blockbusters? Is it the fact that everything else sucks balls at the moment? Probably a bit of all of the above.

Okay, let's dig a bit deeper. For starters, let's not get carried away with a one off phenomenon that could be based on any number of factors. Secondly, Nim's Island is more of a kid's adventure and The Forbidden Kingdom is a comic family-friendly martial arts movie, so it's not strictly an all-comedy top 5.

For us the big story has to be that Baby Mama made over $18 million, which is a lot for a comedy made on a modest budget. So our conclusion is Tina Fey is officially a star. Who the hell is she you ask, and how is she a star if you've never heard of her? Tina Fey was the star and first female head writer of Saturday Night Live, which we don't get here. She created and starred in the hit series 30 Rock, which hasn't really taken off this side of the pond. And she also wrote the surprisingly smart Mean Girls. When we say she's a star, we mean she could be the female Woody Allen. i.e. not a classic movie star but someone who's involvement off-screen is as important as they're presence on-screen.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall held over extremely well with $11 million, suggesting decent word of mouth and amazingly Harold and Kumar opened hugely for something that looks like it should be found at the bottom of a bargain basement on VHS for 99 cent. Those crazy Yanks never cease to amaze us.
